Went away this weekend. An aquantance there asked me, "so why dont you have a girlfriend?". Therefore being in a relationship is simply a conscious choice is it? I think it was a stupid question.

You can read the question as assuming heteronormative implications as an insult or simply erring on the side of caution, since most people who arent gay get offended by the suggestion of anything other than the "norm". No need to be hyper sensative about gender self-identification imo.
The thing that bothered me was the question implies that any lack of being in a relationship is seen as a consious choise, therefore implying something strange about someone who would balk socail standards and choose to be single.
